Devitrification of thin film Cu–Zr metallic glass via ultrashort pulsed laser annealing

In this work we report on an ultrashort pulsed laser annealing-driven devitrification of thin film Cu67Zr33 metallic glass characterized by micro-beam X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques. The essential feature annealing is ultrafast heating (1014 K/s) femtosecond optical excitation followed extremely rapid cooling (1010–12 due to heat dissipation into the substrate. During repetitive excitation, take snapshots intermediate, frozen-in stages glass-crystal transformation study its kinetics. A quantitative analysis patterns supported result shows that proceeds a formation energetically favourable layer crystalline ZrO2 free surface glassy accompanied nucleation growth fcc-Cu in residual amorphous matrix. We demonstrate at low effective temperatures kinetics both products correlated, while high they decouple forms order magnitude faster than Cu.
